”I can’t sleep because I’m disturbed by the footsteps of the people upstairs.”
- This is common in Japanese apartments. You can hear the noise from the floor above you, so you also have to be careful not to be too noisy to the people below you, which is difficult for families with small children.

For example, if a person in an office on the 20th floor says, 「下のコンビニに行ってくるね!」(“I’m going to the convenience store below!”), it does not mean that there is a convenience store on the 19th floor, but that there is a convenience store on the first or second floor of the office building, and that is where she is going.
