Birthday Phrases to Celebrate Your Special Ones in Japanese

Are you struggling to write your birthday message in Japanese? We are going to introduce you to some phrases to celebrate birthdays. In Japan, we don’t use passionate expressions, so you may feel that you are missing something, but these messages are natural. Use any combination of phrases as you like. 

For anyone (Casual)

「お誕生日おめでとう！」
(おたんじょうびおめでとう / Otanjōbi omedetō)
“Happy birthday!”

「素敵な日を過ごしてね。」
(すてきなひをすごしてね / Sutekina hi wo sugoshitene)  
“Have a wonderful day.”

「素敵な1年を過ごしてね。」
(すてきないちねんをすごしてね / Sutekina ichinen wo sugoshitene.)
“Have a wonderful year.”

「良い1年を！」

「おばあちゃん」
(Obāchan)
“Grandma”

*This term can be used for elderly women even if they are not your grandmothers. If it is not a formal occasion, I would call them by this friendly term, even if I have never met them before.

「おじいちゃん」
(Ojīchan)
“Grandpa”

*This term can be used for elderly men even if they are not your grandfathers. If it is not a formal occasion, I would call them by this friendly term, even if I have never met them before.

「おばあさん」
(Obāsan)
“Grandmother”

*This term can be used for elderly women even if they are not your grandmothers. While the phrase conveys the intention of respect, it may make them feel a bit of emotional distance.

「おじいさん」
(Ojīsan)
“Grandfather”

*This term can be used for elderly men even if they are not your grandfathers. While the phrase conveys the intention of respect, it may make them feel a bit of emotional distance.

「体に気を付けて過ごしてください。」
(からだにきをつけてすごしてください / Karada ni ki wo tsukete sugoshite kudasai)
“Please take good care of yourself.”

「長生きしてください。」
(ながいきしてください / Nagaiki shitekudasai)
“I hope you stay around for a long time.”

「元気に過ごしてくださいね。」
(げんきにすごしてくださいね / Genki ni sugoshite kudasaine)
“Please stay well.”

(For men)
